Dethatching

This involves removing the dense layer of thatch—made up of dead grass, roots, and other organic material — that accumulates between the soil and your lawn. When this layer grows thicker, it prevents air, nutrients, sunlight, and water from reaching the soil and roots.

When to dethatch:

• Your cool-season grass (typical in the  northern parts of the U.S.) in early spring or late summer to early fall, during the grass’ active growing season
